Successfully Applying to NHS Research Ethics Committees
Domain: C1 Professional conduct

Format of Workshop: Information and Discussion
Suitable for: All

If your research involves NHS patients and/or human tissue, there is a legal requirement to obtain a favourable ethical opinion from an NHS Research Ethics Committee (REC) before commencing your research. This workshop aims to make the process less intimidating and is led by University staff responsible for facilitating the REC application process, one of whom is an experienced REC member.
It is advisable (though not essential) that you attend the ‘Introduction to Clinical Research Regulations’ workshop sessions prior to attending this one.
By the end of the workshop you should be able to:
- understand the legal/regulatory basis of a REC review;
- understand how to complete an IRAS application;
- avoid some of the common errors made by REC applicants;
- know what to expect from a REC meeting;
- feel more confident about attending a meeting and responding to questions from a REC
