Welcome to Cardiff University! You are warmly invited to attend the Doctoral Academy’s ‘Starting Out’ induction webinar. In this short interactive session, which will complement more tailored induction provided by your School, you will have an opportunity to virtually meet with other students who are also starting a research degree and to learn about:

• The wider research environment at Cardiff University and key people and services who are here to support you through your PhD;
• The wider training and learning opportunities both at the Doctoral Academy and across Cardiff University.
• Different ways of engaging with the postgraduate research community.

The webinar will be running in two parts on Thursday 9 April:

Part One: 10:00 – 11:30
A chance to meet your peers and Doctoral Academy staff, receive an introduction to the Doctoral Academy more broadly, and learn about the different ways of engaging with the postgraduate research community.

Part Two: 13:00 – 14:30
Here you will learn all about the Doctoral Academy Programme, including the online learning resources available to you, and receive hints, tips and strategies for establishing and maintaining your relationship with your supervisor. At the end of the session, we will go through the ‘next steps’ that you will need to take in order to get your research degree off the ground.

To attend the webinar, please click here and join on the day. We advise joining using a device that has a microphone and, if possible, a camera. We have a number of question and answers sessions planned throughout both parts of the session so you’ll have opportunity to ask about anything you need help with. Please also be advised that the session will be recorded so that you can revisit it.

There are two things you may wish to look at before you join us:

1.”Beginning Your Student Life at Cardiff University”: a general navigation guide for all new students, about the City and key services at the University. This will be especially helpful if you have not been able to travel to Cardiff to start your programme.

2. The Postgraduate Research page on the Student Intranet, which contains useful information about undertaking a research degree and various support resources, including the Doctoral Academy. You will find our typical programme of activities and training here.
